Please bare with me while this page is being developed. I am using Indi's first litter as the example photographs. They were only born on the 13th April, so this page will be updated when kittens reach various stages.
Newborn
As soon as a kitten is born usually the mother instinctively knows what to do and will bite through the umbilical cord herself and start to lick the kitten straight away. She may also enjoy eating the placenta.
Ragdoll kittens are all born completely white and most weigh between 80g and 120g. All newborn kittens are completely dependent on their mothers. Their eyes and ear canals are closed. They rely on there sense of smell to find the mothers teat some also may need help. It is important that they start to suckle as soon as possible.
Day One
The average litter size is between two and six kittens and can last quite a few hours. This litter I am using as an example is Indi's first litter and she gave birth to the first kitten at 1.20pm and the fourth and final kitten was born at 3.21pm.
The first 24 hours of a kittens life is crucial and anything can happen!!
I like to see mum happy, content, resting, washing and feeding her kittens.
Week One
Week Two
At one week old the pattern of a ragdoll kitten can usually be seen unless the are red or cream.
This litter is only blues or seals in either colourpoint of bicolour so quite an easy one to identify. You can see if a kitten will be colour point as colour starts to appear on their little noses and feet. Bicolour of course will have white feet and pink noses :-)
All the kittens have usually doubled their birth weight in a week and are getting little round bellies :-) Eyes are still closed.
